I have some specific rules for how to conduct yourself on a forum.
There is etiquette, and too many times I see people turn up on a
forum and expect it to run as they wish it to.

Reality: it’s not all about you. It’s about respecting your
environment, and first step is to learn what that environment is
about. What are that forum’s rules for how you conduct yourself?

Then, I give you some ideas on what to put into your first forum post.
It’s really very simple, and no less effective within that simplicity.

I suggest how to make sure the forums don’t become a time suck for
you. As you are in the forums for market leadership purposes, not to
actually build up your forum post count.

I offer an idea of how to use the forum as inspiration for your
blog post on your WPD blog (your mothership site).

And I remind you about not engaging. Trolls are not worth your
energy.

It’s also not about you trying to sell yourself or products
on a forum. They offer so much more valuable information
for you to become a bona fide market leadership.

So remember, that greatest leaders are the greatest servants.
Look to help where you can. As opposed to see what you can get
from it. And remember, respect & manners.

I was a single dad, trying to get myself and my kids off of
welfare and be the provider I wanted to be, and every slicked-
back guru out there was telling me:

“Be an affiliate marketer!  It’s the easy way to make money
online because you DON’T have to SELL – let the vendor do the
selling!”

And boy, that sounded great!  I already had a ton to learn
about making money online, so if I could scratch selling off
the list (at least to start) – I could get rocking and
rolling…

BUT they LIED!

If I have to:

* Write a pay-per-click ad
* Write a pre-sell
* Create a bonus offer
* Distribute videos
* Send emails

All of that stuff IS selling!  Maybe a long time ago, you used
to be able to just post links directly to salesletters and
make a killing, but that’s never been my experience.

I actually DID have to learn a LOT about selling to really hit
my stride and build my income.

Even my impartial reviews convert because I know EXACTLY what
features and benefits I need to talk about to close a sale in
the reader’s mind.

For example, if I was writing a review to sell a physical
product, I really wouldn’t spend any of my review talking
about the packaging.  That’s not what’s going to make the
reader want what I’m reviewing, right?

That’s a decision I’m making thinking as a salesman, and not a
reviewer.

So if you’ve gotten into affiliate marketing thinking you
could avoid learning salesmanship, I’m sorry that this might
seem like bad news, but it’s really NOT.

See, if you’re SERIOUS about escaping a day job, or just being
your own boss, and you’ve decided that the internet is how
you’re going to do it – just deal with the fact.

You MUST be willing to sell.

But you DON’T have to adopt any sleazy or pushy tactics.
Here’s how I got over my fear of being direct with my
prospects.

I’m sure if you’re like me, you’ve bought a LOT of stuff about
internet marketing over the years.  What I did was went back
and looked at the copy that sold ME.

I made a list of all the pieces that I thought convinced me to
buy myself, and I ignored all the stuff that I thought was
creepy or obnoxious.

Eventually, I had a swipe file full of subtle, but compelling
ways to talk about a product that makes people really WANT it,
WITHOUT having to put any kind of fake pressure on them.

And I only ever had to use the stuff I felt had worked on ME,
and I went ahead and promoted the things I had bought and
liked.  That made it really easy to sell…

But it WAS still SELLING, no matter what those gurus told me.

I only wish now that I hadn’t spent too much time AVOIDING
learning salesmanship myself, because (and this is weird) I
kind of felt like if I DID, I would be somehow doing it “wrong”.

Sounds silly – I know, but examine your own mind for a minute
and think about if you’re trying to maybe unconsciously AVOID
learning how to sell.  Out of fear, or because you’ve be told
to… doesn’t matter.

Don’t be afraid or delay any longer.  Go out and learn how to
sell YOU, and then go sell to people just like yourself.
You’ll find it’s easy as falling off a log.

And FUN – plus, that’s when you really start making money as
an affiliate.  At least, that’s been my own experience – which
I’m glad to share with you today.

42 Blog Post Ideas You Can Outright Steal

This is a couple of days old now, so forgive me for writing this post a little late. I did start it over the weekend when i got news of the release but didn’t finish my blog post until today.

Saturday saw the release of Syndk8’s Auto Pligg Submitter, for those who aren’t aware, Syndk8 is pretty much the top black forum on the net and Pligg is a sort of content management system which is effectively a clone of the much loved Digg.com. Pligg allows members to submit news stories about various topics and then vote and comment on said stories. This in turn effects what shows up on the front page, and how long for, its a social media news site.

The Pligg Auto submitter is being sold for $189 which for what it actually does is peanuts. Basically the software will allow you to mass spam almost any Pligg based site out in the wild. You would be forgiven in thinking that it isn’t a big deal until you realise that some high profile sites such as Sphinn.com are using the Pligg engine.

Lets look at some of the features that the Pligg spammer (i mean auto submitter) has…

• Automatically register for accounts. Even breaks CAPTCHAs!!
• Create UNLIMITED profiles and identities
• Submit stories and comment to 1000’s of sites
• Automated pinging after each submission
• Stats to show succesful submissions
• Proxy support

So as you can see, it’s a pretty rounded product, and the big thing here is that it can break captcha’s which is a pretty big deal in the world of spamming. Basically you are getting a piece of software which can automate the posting of hundreds of stories and links back to your site without you hardly lifting a finger.

So lets look at this from the point of spamming and building your site up, you could spend $180 on this product and be able to spam a hell of a lot of sites and get some decent links in or you could spend $180 one ok quility link. If you do a Google Search for “powered by pligg” you can see that the results number in the 1,380,000 range. Even if you assume that 25% of those sites no longer exist then you still have a massive amount of sites at your disposal to spam. Lets also check out the number of Google Searches going on at the moment…

As you can see from the image above, even though this software has only been out for four days, the amount of people searching for “powered by pligg” to spam the sites is pretty high, so what can webmasters do about it?

• Remove the “powered by pligg” footprint in your template
• Take a look at using ReCaptcha instead of Pliggs built in Captcha system, there is a (sort of) guide on the Pligg forum
• Add in another layer of capture which asks a questions such as “is water a liquid or gas?”
• Ensure that you monitor the number of users in the admin area, if you see this number shooting up then its safe to say that you are being targetted
• Like the above point, watch to see the number of stories being submitted, if they jump up then you are probably being targetted

I would imagine that within the next couple of releases Pligg will probably address a lot of the loopholes that the auto submitter is using to work, however it seems that this is an on going project from Syndk8 so it looks like this battle will last for some time. I must admit the Pligg development cycle can be a bit hit and miss so only time will tell what will happen.

In closing, i have tried to write this post from both the positive view points of a spammer and also the negative viewpoints of a Pligg admin, who knows, i may even use this software to promote my own Pligg based site

Pligg Auto submitter is being sold for $189

I’ve even had an influx of links by not linking, like when Jeremy Zawodny ‘attacked’ me in his blog for forgetting to link to a quote from the Yahoo Search Blog. This led to a huge leap in traffic, ad revenue, and RSS subscriptions for the day before I even showed up at work and realized what was going on. It also led to a lot of constructive criticism of this blog from a very select focus group in Jeremy’s comments; which was taken to heart.

After looking up the term “link baiting” on Google I noticed that the Search Engine Journal was #1, and #2 for “linkbaiting” (following Performancing); hence I reckon this makes us an authority on linkbaiting, special thanks to Rand and Rob.

Speaking of link baiting, I’m quite proud of the job SEJ did with our Search Blog Awards, which generated hundreds of links from sites and blogs which are completely relevant to our theme, content and market. Here’s how it worked out:

1. I noticed that there are all kinds of cool blog awards and search engine awards, but no specific search blog awards. So I created one.

2. I started with nominations to see which blogs prove to be popular among the SEO/SEM crowd

3. Aaron Wall and I then categorized those nominations into SEO, Search Engine Marketing, Search Engine News, Blog Search, and other categories, including some special head to head voting; Matt Cutts vs. Jeremy Zawodny, and SE Roundtable vs. Threadwatch.

4. I then sent out a handful of emails to some choice bloggers whom I have a trusted relationship with, blogs then started posting links to the awards.

5. Then, other bloggers cover the story (and link to SEJ) and bloggers who I did not know found mentions of their blogs on other blogs, they of course wanted to win the competition, and linked to the SEJ.

6. As the week went on, Jeremy Zawodny and Matt Cutts get competitive as the awards gain momentum, and place posts about the competition on their VERY POPULAR blogs : Jeremy’s post and Matt’s post.

Matt Cutts, Senior Google Engineer even wrote : “By the way, funny, creative awards attract link love. Loren, lots of SEO blogs will link to you as a result of your blog awards. Smart, very smart.”

7. More blogs and sites then picked up the contest. I thought to myself “How the hell did I pull this off?” and pondered ways to capitalize on the momentum even more, like releasing the news of one winner per day next week on SEJ.

8. This link baiting effort took me about 4 hours of work and resulted in quite valuable natural links to the site, and not a bunch of links from offbeat directories or sites which have included me with 1,000’s of irrelevant links to my content. In essence, the linking results of the Search Blogs Awards were more or less perfect.

Results :

* The results of the contest led to the winning blogs announcing they have won and linking back to Search Engine Journal, which was not required.

Here’s a review of links gained:

Nominations Announcement Post : Yahoo : 32 backlinks

Vote for Favorite Search Blogs Post : Yahoo : 1,960 Backlinks

* 1,960 links to the contest announcement page is pretty good, even if 10% are judged to be quality back links, that’s still 196 more than I had beforehand. If $100 per link is the going rate for an organic & valuable link to a web site, then the four hours I put into this contest resulted in $196,000 worth of links. That’s one valuable idea.

* Given the contest was over less than a month ago, it’s difficult to judge the effects on search ranking, but I am seeing a lot more web search generated referrals over the past two weeks, which I’m assuming are a result of this contest (and over 2,800 pages of content).

This is just one example of a quality linkbaiting campaign and as linkbaiting grows, especially with an ‘unofficial’ endorsement from Google via Matt Cutts, expect the link generation idea market to heat up in the SEO and Internet Marketing (since linking is essentially for traffic generation) industry. How can you produce a successful linkbaiting campaign for your niche market?
